Mount Etna eruption lights up Sicily skies - December 2013
Mount Etna eruption lights up Sicily skies
Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano, erupted again on November 24th and showered the island of Sicily with sharp volcanic rocks and heavy ash. The force of the eruption was strong enough to push the material hundreds of kilometers across the Strait of Messina towards the Italian mainland.
New Tremor has started on 12-12-2013 to increase this morning, although so far, no visible activity at the New SE crater has appeared while strong degassing from the NE crater continues. The next hours will probably show whether the volcano is going to prepare its next paroxysm in the near future or not.
After the deep-seated activity in the NE crater on Friday 13-12-2013 , explosions have started at the New SE crater and tremor started to rise steeply this morning. It seems very likely that the 20th paroxysm at the NSEC is about to occur.
Although those less accustomed to Etna’s outbursts might have remained safely beneath their roofs, many townspeople chose to walk the streets, umbrellas in hand.
The latest lava flow did not endanger any houses, and no evacuation was ordered.
The 20th paroxysm at the New SE crater in 2013 began on 14-12-2013 evening and ended at dawn, shortly after reaching its peak. The eruption lasted relatively long, but was relatively weak in intensity (compared to previous paroxysms). It produced only relatively low pulsating lava fountains with associated ash plumes and a small lava flow to the SE towards the Valle del Bove.
Tremor has dropped sharply, but at the moment of updating, strombolian explosions, ash emission and the effusion of the lava flow continue at reduced level.
The eruption Saturday 15-12-2013 did not force any evacuations, but a highway was closed for half an hour as a precaution. Authorities also briefly closed two of four air corridors serving the nearby Catania airport but air traffic was not interrupted.
