Mount Etna Sicily - spectacular eruption on Tuesday night 05-03-2013

Mount Etna (Latin: Aetna) is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, close to Messina and Catania.

It has been created by the Earth's active tectonic plate system – the African plate is moving below the Eurasian plate. As the Eurasian plate moves down into the Earth, it melts. Rising magma erupts at the surface as lava and ash and builds Etna in the process.

Since 26.02.2013 Vulcany Etna is active again. The volcano's south-eastern crater "Nuovo Cratere di Sud-Est dell’Etna" has been the most active in recent years.

In the night of 5. march to 6. März 2013 Mount Etna showed a spectacular eruption blowing mass of lava in the air.

Lava continues to spew from Mount Etna in Sicily on Wednesday after an initial eruption from its south-eastern crater on Tuesday. Communities in the nearby town of Catania have not been afftected and no warnings of danger have been issued. The volcano's south-eastern crater has been the most active in recent years.
