Impressive gorge formed by centuries of lava flow

 

Some thousand years ago a lava flow of the Etna volcano obstructed the passing of the Alcantara river and thus the latter had to cleave through the cooling lava, which evoked that these curious forms of prisms were created.
 
The Alcantara gorge offers several possibilities to spend your time. There are some chilly places to relax during summer, you can have a swim or you can join a boats tour on the river.
